In this photo of May 1935, Sardar Patel and Mahatma Gandhi are seen conversing with the rest of the comrades in the battle against plague in the camp of Borsad. Mahadev Desai is standing behind them.

During the Corona epidemic, there were many stories in which the children refused to touch the father and the brother touched the brother. The leaders were also seen fighting the battle of Corona from far away. Sardar Patel is an example for such people and leaders too. They fought fiercely not only with the British, but also with the plague of the corona-like plague. In spite of the panicky atmosphere, Bekhouf Patel reached out among the plague patients. Buried the tent under the tree. Collected the common people and beat the plague on their own.

The pandal under the mango tree was the same house and the same office

It is from 1935. The plague had become an epidemic in Borsad taluka of the present-day Anand district of Gujarat. Even after the death of hundreds of people, the British government was not at all serious about it. By then, the Sardar had tasted the power of the common people to the British through the Kheda and Bardoli movement. But this time the same people were in trouble.

In fact, plague cases were coming up in Borsad since 1932, but by June of 1935, more than 450 people fell victim to plague in 27 villages of this area. As soon as this news began, Patel first understood the situation with a doctor named Bhaskar Patel. They found out what should be done on scientific basis according to the resources available there.

After this Patel himself reached Borsad. There was chaos all around. All the villagers were leaving their homes and settling in the fields in fear of mice and sick. In such an environment, Patel put the pandal under a mango tree. This tent became his office and home. Patel recruited volunteers from here. Told them about the risk involved in the fight against the plague. It was from here that he made arrangements to admit patients to nearby hospitals. Large scale cleanliness campaigns were carried out in the affected villages. Started distributing pamphlets to the villagers to inform them about the dangers of plague, ways to avoid it and precautions to be taken when they are ill.

Sardar Patel himself reached the plague hunting all the villages. Later Mahatma Gandhi also went to each house in Borsad village and asked the people to support the Sardar.

Patel himself went to each village

During this battle, Sardar Patel himself reached each affected village. At a time when only the family members of the sick were not ready to treat the awe-struck, Patel’s patronage from the Beech Maidan-e-Jung enlivened the local Volunteers so that the plague defeat was decided. And it happened too.

Mahatma Gandhi also reached and asked to help Sardar

Mahatma Gandhi also reached Borsad a few days later. He also stayed in a tent under the tree with Sardar Patel. Gandhi also reached the affected villages. Met people from house to house Gandhi asked the people to take care of cleanliness and to support Sardar Patel.

If the government did not agree to the inquiry, Sardar formed a committee, it was found out that 4% of the vaccines were installed in villages in British areas, while 60% in Baroda Raj.

The then Bombay province government refused to conduct an inquiry into the negligence of the officers amid the ever increasing cases of plague in Borsad. In response, Sardar Patel made an expert committee and conducted the investigation on his behalf. The committee investigated Sardar Patel’s allegations against the government and in response to the state government’s counter-allegations against Congress. The committee has Report I found the allegations of Sardar Patel to be true. The report revealed that only 4% of people in plague-affected British areas were vaccinated and 25% in cities, while 60% of people in both areas of Baroda Raj were vaccinated.

The British government made big claims, imposed 5 thousand vaccines, spent 2500 rupees

Sardar Patel and Durbar Gopal Das Desai, who were accompanying him in this battle, started work against the epidemic in March 1935. When the news about this appeared in newspapers, the Bombay government issued a statement for the first time on 27 April 1935 and made big claims.

As soon as the plague cases were detected, in September 1934, the local board appointed a plague duty officer to catch the rats.

– Inspector sent to the village named Israma for cleaning and vaccination.

– Another plague duty officer was deployed in February.

Earlier, in 1932, 1933 and 1934 too many special plague duty officers were sent.

– 5000 people were vaccinated. Till March, the board spent Rs 2,500 in rescue operations.

Patel gave a selective answer – how a doctor put 5 thousand vaccines, spent only 1699 rupees

Sardar Patel and his inquiry committee responded by selectively to all the claims of the government. He wrote, The plague cases have been coming up in Borsad since 1932 and the government got the time to give a statement after three years. The government did not specify the number of affected villages. In 1932, there was a plague in only one village. In 1933, such villages became 10. The number increased to 14 in 1934 and by 1935 the disease spread to 27 villages. The death toll rose from 52 to 589. Sardar asked, if the government had taken the right steps, would it have happened?

– Special Medical Officer posted in 1932 did not have equipment. It was sent in September, while plague cases were reported by April.

The plague spread in December 1933, but then the special officer was sent in March 1934.

– Knowing vaccination was ignored. The same medical officer was given the responsibility of the whole country.

In Virsad, the same medical officer administered 3 thousand vaccines in six months. Of these, 2 thousand vaccines were applied in only five weeks.

– A single doctor was posted in Borsad, he could not vaccinate five thousand.

– The doctor named Dr. Shah put the vaccine in such a bad way that people had to face a lot of problems, after all, the government had to remove them only after applying 400 vaccines.

– 27 migrants from plague-affected areas in Borsad were not removed or isolated. While by then 300 people had died.

– Five months after the outbreak, the Collector or Assistant Director Public Health did not visit the area.

– Local board spent Rs 2,500 not Rs 2486 in rescue work. This amount was not spent in the affected area but in the entire district. At the same time, there was 787 rupees of Calra relief.
