Congress veteran Motilal Vora (93) died on Monday. He breathed his last at Fortins Hospital in Delhi. He was the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh twice. He was also the treasurer of the party from 2000 to 2018 (18 years). Vora also celebrated her 93rd birthday yesterday (December 20).

After Vora, Ahmed Patel was made the treasurer. Patel also died on 25 November this year.

Politics of undivided Madhya Pradesh was an important part
Vora, who was a member of the Samajparti in 1968, became a member of the Durg Municipal Committee of undivided Madhya Pradesh. Joined Congress in 1970. Became MLA on Congress ticket in 1972. After this, in 1977 and 1980, he was also elected MLA. First Minister of State in Higher Education Department in Arjun Singh’s Cabinet. Was made cabinet minister in 1983. He also served as the Chairman of Madhya Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation during 1981-84.

On 13 February 1985, Vora was made the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. Resigned as Chief Minister on 13 February 1988 and took charge of the Ministry of Health-Family Welfare and Civil Aviation of the Center on 14 February 1988. In April 1988, Vora was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh. He was also the Governor of Uttar Pradesh from 26 May 1993 to 3 May 1996.

Due to National Herald case in controversy
Vora was made the Chairman and Managing Director of Associated Journals Limited (AJL) on 22 March 2002. Vora was also involved in the National Herald News Paper’s property dispute. At present, a hearing is going on in the court regarding this case. The case has not been decided.

Born in erstwhile Jodhpur state
Motilal Vora was born on 20 December 1928 in Nagaur (then the princely state of Jodhpur). His father’s name was Mohanlal Vora and mother’s name was Amba Bai. He was married to Shanti Devi Vora. They have four daughters and two sons. Son Arun Vora is an MLA from Durg and he has been an MLA three times.
