Leaving milk with meat is the single biggest way to save the Earth

76 years ago, the English Donald Watson coined the word vegan.

In Britain, animal rights advocate Donald Watson first used the word vegan. He formed The Vegan Society in November 1944 with his wife Dorothy and three friends. He called vegetarians who do not eat dairy products and eggs. But in 1951, the Vegan Society got involved in veganism to eliminate all forms of beastliness from life.

Leaving Carnivores at the age of 14, making New Year’s resolution

Born in Yorkshire, the UK in 1910, Watson’s father was the headmaster of the mining community. As a child, he often visited his uncle’s fields. At the same time, the incident of killing the pig for meat made him quite restless. In 1924, Watson, aged 14, gave up the carnivore with a pledge of a new year. After this, he felt that it is unethical to raise cattle for milk. After this, he also left milk.

Perhaps the first recorded anecdote about veganism in India is related to Mahatma Gandhi and his dilemma about milk. Then there was no such idea of Veganism in the world. It happened that after Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa in 1915, after Champaran in Bihar, in 1918, there was a big peasant movement in Kheda in Gujarat. Soon after, he succumbed to severe dysentery.

Doctors advised that they needed more protein. On one hand, Gandhi was a vegetarian and on the other hand, he was not digesting pulses. He was advised by the doctors to take milk for protein. Just here, Gandhi’s vegan dilemma has come to the fore.

Actually, Gandhi was against the practice of cow blowing for cows. In this, the air was filled in the body of the cows for milking. At the same time, Gandhi did not agree to give the cow-buffalo a feeling of a live calf and milking milk with a dummy prepared with straw in his skin when the calf died. Gandhi considered both these traditions to be violence with cow-buffalo. Due to this, they had given up all the milk or everything made from it.

On the one hand, the Mahatma could not break his vow, on the other hand, he had to survive. This was the dilemma of Vegan Mahatma Gandhi. Kasturba advised Gandhi to drink goat’s milk to live in the place of cow or buffalo.

Gandhi agreed to this, but he knew that he had compromised his ideals. In my experiment with the autobiography Satya, he wrote, the sting of my work is not yet erased and my thinking about giving up goat milk is going on. While drinking goat’s milk, I feel sad every day.
