Neetu David, the head of the women’s selection committee at BCCI, said there are plans to increase the number of teams in the T20 Challenge from next season. Till now only three teams play in it. 43-year-old Neetu said that like men’s cricket, work is going on to prepare bench strength in women’s cricket too. Neetu has played 97 ODIs and 10 Test matches for India. Excerpts from his conversation…

Question: There is talk of increasing the number of teams in IPL, whereas there is no such discussion in Women’s T20. Why so?
answer:
The number of teams in the Women’s T20 Challenge i.e. Women’s IPL was to be increased from this year itself. But being in the UAE did not increase the number. Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League also started during this period. So it was difficult to get big players. The number of teams will increase from next season. It will be our endeavor to not have any international series during this period, so that more and more players are available.

Question: What efforts are being made to increase bench strength in women’s cricket?
answer:
There are many good talents in women’s cricket. In order to increase the bench strength, plans are being made to set up camps for the under-19 and other players who are unable to make a place in the team.

Question: What is being done to increase women’s cricket in small cities?
answer:
Earlier girls used to train in boys academy itself, but now academies are opening in small towns too. Former players have also started the academy. State governments are also opening academies for girls.

Question: International series of male cricketers is happening. Why not in women’s cricket?
answer:
The tournament is under discussion with the Sri Lankan Board. It is late due to corona. It is expected that the schedule of the series will be decided soon.

Question: The women’s team loses in the finals. Is the team not mentally prepared?
answer:
The team lacks match taprament. Much improved than before. Earlier the team could not even reach the final. Players are working on mental strength. Many players meditated at home during lockdown. Now she is getting stronger both physically and mentally. It will also see its impact in the upcoming tournament.

Question: For the first time T20 Challenge got sponsor, how do you see it?
answer:
The number of teams will increase with the arrival of sponsors. Players will also get more money than before. Also, cricket will be promoted in girls.

Q: Foreign tour of women team is less. What efforts are being made to increase it?
answer:
There are plans to increase the female tour. But these will be step by step. Right now, a plan is being made to organize the camp. Our focus is that the foreign visits of girls should be as much as men.

Question: Female players get less amount than male players, why?
answer:
Male cricketers play year-round, while female players play less than they do. In this case, the money is given accordingly. I don’t think money matters here, because after BCCI takeover of women’s cricket, women players are getting all kinds of facilities. Now domestic tournaments are also better. In our time there was neither money nor facilities. Much has changed now. Tournaments are also happening more. I hope that the way the team is performing, they will definitely get equal status as men.
