  • Mumbai Police arrested car designer Dilip Chhabria
  • Chhabria was involved in car finance and fake registration racket – police

The Mumbai Police has made several revelations following the arrest of car designer Dilip Chhabria, who created the country’s first racing car. Police said Chhabria was allegedly involved in car finance and fake registration racket. This racket used luxury cars made of Chhabria. The police have also seized a car.

It is alleged that Chhabria used to buy his own cars as a customer and used to take loans on those cars. Chhabria has been arrested on various charges including fraud and forgery. He was produced in Mumbai’s Fort Court on Tuesday, from where he has been sent to the custody of the crime branch till January 2.

Revealed after seizure of sports car
Chhabria was arrested by the Crime Secret Unit (CIU) of Mumbai Crime Branch on Monday evening. The scam came to light when police seized a sports car ‘DC Avanti’ made by Dilip Chhabria Design Pvt Ltd in South Mumbai. Police was informed that the registration of this car is fake.

The crime branch was informed that the two-seater sports car was going to come near Hotel Trident at DC Avanti Nariman Point, but that car did not reach there that day. The next day, on 28 December, the police received a tip that the car was going to arrive at the Taj Mahal Hotel, Colaba. The police laid a trap there and took possession of the car as soon as it arrived.

Police have also seized a 'DC Avanti' car made by their company.

Two vehicles of same number found registered in Chennai and Haryana
The documents shown by the owner of the seized car were registered in Chennai. Police said that the second car of the same engine and chassis number was found registered in Haryana. Investigation revealed that Dilip Chhabria’s company has taken a loan of about Rs 42 lakh for each ‘DC Avanti’ car in the name of fake customers.

120 cars sold at home and abroad
120 ‘DC Avanti’ cars have been sold in India and abroad and at least 90 cars have been allegedly used to obtain fake loans. The police claimed that the carts shown on paper to take the loan had already been sold.

Own car and sold

Police said several non-banking financial companies, including BMW Financial Services, have been cheated in this way. Officials said that the crime branch is ascertaining how much debt has been taken by fraud and how much the government has suffered due to tax evasion.

Investigation has revealed that DC Avanti was built and bought by Dilip Chhabria himself, then sold it to a third party. This means that the accused was taking a loan for his cars.

Made the country’s first sports car
Chhabria also designed India’s first sports car. He has designed everything from cars to luxury buses. He has designed cars for all film personalities including Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan. Along with the car, he also designs vanity vans. They cost millions.

Chhabria’s client list also includes stars such as comedians Kapil Sharma, Madhuri Dixit, Hrithik Roshan. He has also designed the car for the Bollywood movie Tarzan The Wonder Car. Many big cities have Dilip Chhabria’s design studios.
