The final result of the District Development Council (DDC) election in Jammu and Kashmir has been released. The position of 278 seats out of 280 is now cleared. Election has been postponed to two seats. The maximum number of 110 seats have gone to the People’s Alliance for Group Declaration (PAGD). BJP has emerged as the largest party in this election by winning 75 seats.

This result is important in many ways. This is because for the first time BJP has won 3 seats in the Valley (Kashmir). On the other hand, in Jammu, which is called the stronghold of the BJP, the Gupta Alliance has succeeded in winning 34 seats. These results are telling that there is a change in the politics of Jammu and Kashmir.

BJP eyeing independent candidate – Omar

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has alleged that the administration is now mobilizing independent candidates for the BJP. This time, 50 independent candidates have won the election. He wrote on social media, ‘Police took a former National Conference MLA. He is not allowing independent candidates to meet. At the same time, some people of the administration are taking the Independent candidates to Srinagar for talks, so that they can be included in the BJP.

6 parties clandestine alliance
This is the first time in the history of Jammu and Kashmir, when 6 major parties contested together. After the removal of article 370, these parties have formed a secret alliance. This includes National Conference headed by Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP besides Sajjad Gani Lone People’s Conference, Awami National Conference, Jammu and Kashmir People’s Movement and local unit of CPI-M. At the same time, BJP and Congress fielded their candidates.

Election big talk

  • Waheed Para, the leader of Mehbooba Mufti’s party PDP has won the election. He was arrested a few days ago by the NIA.
  • Former BJP minister Shyam Lal Chaudhary lost by 11 votes. He fought from Suchetgarh seat in Jammu district.
  • For the first time, Pak refuges got a chance to vote in the DDC election. The number of such refuges is more than 1.50 lakh.
  • Elections were held here for the first time after Article 370 was removed. 6 parties contested jointly under the Gupta group.
  • In Jammu and Kashmir, elections were held in 8 phases for 280 seats of DDC, 234 wards and 12,153 seats of Panch-Sarpanch.
  • Overall 51% voting was done. The first phase was voted on November 28, while the 8th and last phase were voted on December 19.

Assembly election preparations
These elections of DDC are being seen as a litmus test for the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir. Now there is to be a de limitation of the assembly constituencies. This will be followed by assembly elections. However, this election is being seen purely as a test for BJP, Congress, NC or PDP. The analysis of the results will allow the parties to know where and how much is their political land.
