More than five lakh birds have died across the country. Among them, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Kerala are the most affected. In such a situation people are worried how to avoid bird flu with corona? What is bird flu after all? What are its symptoms and treatment? All such questions are coming in people’s minds.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), bird flu is a dangerous disease, which is caused by the influenza type-A H5N1 virus. It is also known as avian influenza. Bird flu can also spread from birds to humans or other animals. Most poultry spreads from chickens that grow in the farm. Like the Corona, it also has many different strains. However, the risk of transmission of this virus from human to human is extremely low.

A bird infected with H5N1 releases the virus through feces or saliva for about 10 days. H5N1 bird flu virus can infect humans through any surface.

How can bird flu be avoided?
Dr Sanjay Kumar Chugh, DM cardiologist from AIIMS, New Delhi, says that an effective solution is not to get in direct contact with birds. Do not touch their beat. Do not go exactly where the birds live. Those who eat egg or chicken and chicken, if they buy it, then take care of cleanliness. Wear gloves when shopping and cutting meats. Immediately sanitize hands or wash hands with soap. Cook non-veg and eat it well, it ends the risk.

How can humans be infected with bird flu?

  • Humans can become infected when they come in contact with an infected bird’s stool, nose, mouth or eyes.
  • The virus can enter humans through the eyes, nose and mouth.
  • You can also get infected by eating raw and contaminated poultry products.
  • In most cases, it was observed that influenza A (H5N1) and A (H7N9) viruses in humans came from contact with infected birds alive or dead.

What are the symptoms of bird flu?
Dr. Sanjay says that all the symptoms of bird flu are viral. There is also a cold, cough, fever, body pain and muscle pain. Apart from these, complaints of breathlessness, bleeding from the nose, eye redness, diarrhea, abdominal pain may also occur. The lungs become breathless due to damage.

Those people who come in contact with birds, they should adopt all the methods of defense. Immediately after its symptoms appear, go to hospital or go to isolation and more ill patients need intensive care.

How dangerous is bird flu?

Doctor Sanjay says that it is a very dangerous disease. In this, the death rate of the infected is up to 60 per cent, that is, 5-6 out of every 10 lives. However, they do not transmit from human to human, but the virus mutates. As has happened in the case of Corona. Due to this, there is a risk of the virus becoming more contagious.

There are 11 bird flu viruses, 5 of which are fatal to humans.

  • There are 11 viruses of bird flu that infect humans, but 5 of these can prove fatal for humans. These are H5N1, H7N3, H7N7, H7N9 and H9N2.
  • These viruses are called HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza). The most dangerous of these is the H5N1 virus. This was the first bird flu virus that also infected humans.
  • These flu viruses are present in the intestines of wild birds around the world, but usually these birds are not sick from them. However, bird flu can make some domesticated birds, including chickens and ducks, sick and even kill them.

Is eating eggs and chicken a risk of bird flu?

  • There is no association between bird flu and eating eggs / chicken. However, doctors suggest people not to eat undercooked poultry products and meat.
  • According to the WHO, there is no evidence yet that cooked poultry food can cause bird flu to a person. The virus is sensitive to temperature and is destroyed in more cooking temperatures.
  • The central government has also said that there is no evidence of outbreak of bird flu virus in humans by eating poultry products. However, caution is necessary when cleaning and cooking.

Is there a risk of bird flu in humans too?

  • H5N1 is the first bird flu virus to infect a human for the first time. Its first case came in Hong Kong in 1997.
  • H5N1 usually occurs in water-dwelling birds, but it can also spread easily to poultry farm birds.
  • According to the WHO, bird flu can be transmitted from one person to another, which is possible, but rare.

What is the treatment for bird flu?
Dr. Sanjay says that in swine flu (H1N1), a drug called Ocel Tamivir (Tomiflu) was used. This medicine is also being used in the treatment of bird flu, but with this medicine you will be completely cured, it is not certain. There is also another medicine, its name is Janami-Veer (Rellenza). These drugs reduce the risk of disease to some extent.

How dangerous is bird flu?

  • Bird flu has spread four times in the world so far. It has also taken the form of an epidemic in more than 60 countries.
  • Since 2003, it has been continuously showing its impact in some country. The H5N1 bird flu virus is the most dangerous, as more than half of those infected die.
  • A total of 861 people have been infected with the H5N1 virus since 2003. Of these, 455 have died, i.e. 52.8 percent of the death rate. This is almost 50 times higher than the death rate due to coronavirus. Corona mortality is 3% in the world and 1.5% in India.
  • The US Health Agency FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved a vaccine design for it a few years ago, but it is not yet available to the public.
