The importance of freedom of the press is right, our concern is peace and harmony: Supreme Court

  • Supreme Court said- the importance of freedom of press is right, our concern is peace and harmony
  • Said Arnab – Freedom of the press does not mean not to ask questions to the media person

The case of allegations of spreading communal hatred during the TV coverage reached the Supreme Court on Monday. Chief Justice SA Bobde commented on the reporting style of Arnab Geswami, Chief Editor of Republic TV. Said- ‘You may be a bit old-fashioned with your reporting. To be fair, I can never accept this level of debate. The level of debate has never been publicly. The court recognizes the importance of freedom of the press, it does not mean that the media person should not be asked questions.

The Supreme Court was hearing a special leave petition filed by the Maharashtra government against the Bombay High Court order of 30 June against Arnab. Arnab is accused of coverage of the Palghar lynching and the mobilization of migrant workers at Bandra railway station in April to spread communal hatred.

CJI Babde told Arnab Geswami’s lawyer Harish Salve – One has to take responsibility in reporting. Some areas have to be run with caution. As a court, our most important concern is peace and harmony. ‘

The CJI said that the court wants assurance of responsibility from his client. In response, Salve said that he agreed with the court’s views, but said that the FIR was not correct and should not be taken as an individual. Last week, another FIR has been filed against the entire editorial team of Republic TV. The court asked Goswami to file an affidavit, postponing the hearing for two weeks.

Strap-tight: Some people are targeted with high pressure
Here, when Singhvi said that some people cannot be considered above the law, the CJI tightened – ‘Some people are targeted with upward pressure. This is the culture of these days. Some people need high security. ‘

Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Riyaz Chagla adjourned the investigation after saying ‘prima facie no case is made against them’. The Bombay High Court order has been challenged by the Maharashtra government in the Supreme Court.
