Counting continues for the District Development Council elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The trends have shown that the public has accepted and supported the People’s Alliance for Group Declaration (PAGD). Out of 280 seats, the results of 244 seats have come. PAGD won 108 seats. BJP has 70 seats and Congress has 21 seats. The BJP has emerged as the largest party and for the first time in Kashmir it has also won seats. However, she could not defeat the secret conference formed by the National Conference, PDP and all parties.
BJP’s performance in Kashmir is better, but overall it is not
The BJP government at the Center may have been credited with conducting the DDC elections in Jammu and Kashmir without any incident, but it could not achieve victory. The PAGD and Congress, consisting of several parties including the National Conference and PDP, could not succeed in defeating the Congress. Half of the 280 seats in 20 districts do not appear to go to the BJP account.
For the first time in Kashmir, Kamal Khil and BJP got 3 seats. BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar and Jammu and Kashmir BJP general secretary Ashok Kaul called the victory big. Engineer Ejaz Hussain, who won from Khanmoh-2 in Kashmir, said that the public reposed confidence in Modi and the PAGD should reconsider its policies. But, this is not the whole picture. BJP has lost seats in many divisions of its stronghold Jammu. In many places, they have been successful in winning the National Conference, Congress or independent candidates.
Why BJP backward from PAGD?
1. The local BJP unit was not successful in establishing its presence in Jammu and Kashmir.
2. The BJP made a mistake in selecting candidates for several seats.
3. Independents who contested against BJP were supported by NC, PDP and Congress.
What does elections mean for BJP?
The BJP entrusted the responsibility of these elections to Union Minister Anurag Thakur. The entire force was thrown into the election. But, the results / trends indicate that the public is not satisfied with the BJP’s policy and working methods.
BJP MP from Jammu Jugal Kishore Sharma said that this election was a challenge for BJP and we are satisfied with the results. However, Sharma also believes that in districts like Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Kishtwar, the party will have to work harder.
